Today is Oct 9th and I came in for supper about 5pm, looked out the window a few minutes later and couldn't see 200 ft for snow and wind. What's up with that?
Well the futurity show has come and went already. We had a good turn out. Now we look to the banquet on Oct 31 and start planning for next year. Come and join us, it’s always a good time.
I hope by next year some of the controversy in our country is settled and we can move forward in unity. God Bless, Denny

FROM THE PRESIDENT (Aug. 09): Hi Members,
Hope everyone is having a good summer. Kinda cool and wet but it sure is nice for outside projects not having the hot weather. The BOD had a kind of unofficial meeting, as most members were not able to attend. We met in Brookings as we wanted to tour the Swiftel facility as a possible site for future shows as SF is costly and due to some problems they are having, the facility upkeep and fairground conditions have left much to be desired the last couple years. We did some brainstorming at the meeting and came up with some ideas to present to the board. We will be having a BOD meeting at the SF Futurity show on Saturday, September 26, immediately after the show, to start planning for next year. There may be some major changes coming up. Be sure to read the October issue of the Hoofprints for results of the September BOD meeting. The trail ride was again well attended. I don't have any official figures but Rebecca sent some pics and said they had a great time. The pics are on the SDPHC site, just click on 2009 pictures, some great shots. Next year the trail ride will be back at Custer, by popular request, same place as 2008. Sharon Karp already has all the information for the 2010 trail ride on our SDPHC web site so feel free to start planning. Well, get those futurity babies weaned and fed up for the show. Hope to see you all soon.
Denny Mead, SDPHC President

Words of Sympathy
The club would like to send out our thoughts and prayers to Nancy (Mitchell) of MansfieldSD on the recent passing of her husband Merritt Jones. He passed away on June 11, 2009 at the age of 80 years old. He and Nancy traveled from coast to coast and border to border in the United States and had even traveled to Europe purchasing and raising horses.

Trail-rideBy Sharon Karp
Well, the ride this year was a muddy one as it had rained the whole week before the ride but we were lucky that the days of the ride were dry. We had a great turn out and I hope everyone had a good time even though the trails were muddy and pens were a sloppy mess. I’ll try to control the weather for next year. The food was great and we were lucky to be entertained on Saturday night by Cowboy Poet, Slim McNaught. Slim told us he started performing live on stage in 2004 and since then has entertained at parties, churches, and gatherings. He appeared on the Susie Luchsinger’s Cowboy Church filmed at the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo (shown on RFD-TV), at the Friday Night Opry, and the Western Music Association Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In addition his poems Cold Water Weather Feedin and Where the Hard Grass Meets the Sky were selected for Awards. Slim was perfect entertainment after a long and exhausting day and ride up CusterMountain. Our silent auction was smaller this year in spite of all the nice items we had to buy but we did raise $180 which will be donated to the APHA Therapeutic Riding program for injured veterans. My plan is to present the check at the banquet during the APHA Convention if I am back from a ride in ZionNational Park. I have booked the Broken Arrow Campground in Custer for our Trail rides in 2010 and 2011. We rode there in 2008 and everyone enjoyed it immensely and there are covered pens available. So Plan to Attend!! Thanks again to ALL!
Yee-haw, the snow is almost gone! Green grass will be close behind. Can't wait to get the mares and their babies out of the stall barn and out in the pasture. Speaking of new foals, if any of you have any new arrivals that you would like to announce, let Rebecca know. E-mail your pictures and information to sdphc@santel.net Rebecca has a "From the Stork" link on our club site to view the new babies. So far there are only three entries. If you haven't visited our club site lately, you should, she has done a fantastic job since taking it over. The new web page address is www.sdphc.net. Thanks or a great job Becca.
This issue of the Hoof prints is oriented toward our SD youth. There are 43 youth in SD who are members of families who are paint horse owners. The South Dakota Paint Horse Club would like to extend a sincere invitation to all SD youth to become club members and show participants. This year SDPHC will be putting on a trail ride June 12-13-14, 2009 at Nemo in the Black Hills. (An annual event, which changes locations each year in the hills). There are registration forms in this copy of Hoofprints. The club also sponsors a show Sept 26-27, 2009 at the fairgrounds in Sioux Falls. There are many youth classes available to participate in and enjoy. On Oct 31, 2009, we have a membership and director meeting with a banquet and stallion service auction to round out the evening. Lots of good food and fellowship. This takes place at the Crossroads in Huron. In addition to the yearly events you can take part in as a member, there is another perk. If you are a senior in high school there are four $1000.00 college scholarships available for application. These scholarships are sponsored by Zone 3 of the American Paint Horse Association.
For those who wish to join our club see the list of officers on the inside cover of this mailing. Please contact our secretary, Beverly Ringlbauer. We hope to hear from you and get to know you at this years club activities. Here's hoping you are all having healthy, colored babies this spring. God Bless. Denny
